harvest

Someone once said, "You can give without loving, but you cannot love without giving". In the Old Testament one of the ways God's people demonstrated their love for God was through giving a tenth of the crops and heards. This was sometimes called the first fruits. In other words they acknowledged God as the giver of all their resources and returned a portion with thanksgiving.

Paul writes in 2 Cor 9:6-7 "Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."

God doesn't want us to get distracted by the accumulation of wealth, or the stock or property markets. He understands that what we treasure most will captivate our hearts. Mat 6:19-21 says, "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart is also."

God is interested in our hearts rather than our money, but our generosity is a reflection of the condition of our hearts. May we know the joy of giving for the growth of God's Kingdom.
