Baptism is the complete immersion into water of those who have confessed their faith in Jesus Christ as God's Son and their Saviour. However, the act of baptism itself does not bring Salvation; it is far more than just immersion in water. It has a number of significant meanings.
Paul in Rom 6:3-5 writes; "All of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death. We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the father, we too may live a new life".
It is symbol of our experience: We are saying that we believe in Christ's death to save us from the consequences of our sin and that we believe in His resurrection. We die to our old lifestyle, instead of living self-centred lives we want to follow new directions given to us by the life and teaching of Jesus.
It is an act of Obedience: Jesus had commanded His disciples to go into all the world... preaching... teaching... baptizing (Mat 28:19-20). Those who believe in Jesus are encouraged to obey Him by being baptized. This is an outward seal of an inner transformation that leads to a whole life time of trusting Christ and obeying Him.
It is also a declaration of Faith: The act of baptism doesn't bring salvation, for only by grace through faith can we be saved. Eph 2:8-9 "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and that not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so that we cannot boast." However faith must always lead to action. Baptism is an action that testifies to the world you belong to Jesus.
Next time you witness a baptism, remember you are witnessing another person who has received God's gift of salvation. One day, someone may witness yours too.
